Definition Of Alcoholism
Alcoholism is defined as any condition that results in the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, despite health problems and negative social consequences. Medical definitions however describe this state as a disease and as an addiction, resulting from consistent use of alcohol. The definition however varies form one medical community to another. It is important to know that, the process is gradual. It begins from use, to heavy use, misuse, dependence and finally, it becomes an addiction.
Remission is a term that is used to refer to a state in which, a person no longer shows symptoms of this state. There are tools that are used in the medical world to conduct screening for alcohol abusers. Identification involves an assessment regarding the damage that alcohol consumption does to the user’s life. Such tools include the cage questionnaire which is named so because of its four questions that the doctor directs to the patient. The alcohol Dependence Data Questionnaire is a more sensitive test than the cage test and helps to distinguish a diagnosis of alcohol dependence from heavy drinking.
The final tool is the Michigan Alcohol Screening Test, used mainly by courts to determine the appropriate sentencing term for people convicted for alcohol-related offences. Alcoholism has various effects in the life of an individual. These include social effects which come as a result of the changes that the individual goes through.
